Novak Djokovic to be deported, loses appeal

A last-ditch attempt to stay in Australia has been rejected in court and now tennis star Novak Djokovic is set to be deported.

His bid to stay in the country was rejected by judges after Djokovic’s appeal after the government cancelled the unvaccinated player’s visa on “health and good order” grounds.

The move sees the end of the tennis player’s bid to defend his Australian Open title and winning a record 21st Grand Slam.

Novak says he is “extremely disappointed” but respected the ruling, made on the eve of his first match.

“I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country,” he said in a statement.

His supporters have made it clear the Australian Open won’t be the same without him.

The Aussie PM Scott Morrison has welcomed “the decision to keep our borders strong and Australians safe.”

“Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected,” he said.
