F1 Drivers Dazzle in LEGO Cars at Miami Grand Prix
Formula 1 has once again pushed the boundaries of fan engagement by replacing the customary driver parade truck with stunning full-scale LEGO cars at the Miami Grand Prix. The innovative move aims to enhance the American fan experience as the 20 drivers showcased their bespoke LEGO replicas ahead of Sunday’s race.
Not just a tonne of bricks – F1 drivers parade around Miami GP track in full-size LEGO cars
Innovative Parade Experience
Each team presented a fully drivable and visually accurate LEGO car, constructed using approximately 400,000 bricks. Sporting the individual colours, liveries, and sponsors of their real-life counterparts, these remarkable vehicles will traverse the 5.4-kilometre track at Miami Gardens. This initiative comes as part of a multi-year partnership between Formula 1 and the LEGO Group, announced in September.
Julia Goldin, chief product and marketing officer at LEGO, expressed excitement over the collaboration: “At the LEGO Group, we have recreated many F1 cars in LEGO brick form in the past, and we believe this new partnership will bring the spectacle of this sport even closer to all fans. It will enable them to celebrate their passion in more immersive ways.”
Drivers Embrace the Fun
The excitement reached new heights as stars like Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris took to the track in the LEGO versions of their racing machines, each weighing 1,000 kg and capable of speeds up to 20 kph, powered by electric motors and mounted on authentic Pirelli tyres. Despite a downpour leading up to the event, the drivers seemed to enjoy their unique vehicles, with George Russell humorously suggesting they could turn the parade into a "bumper cars" experience.
Competitive Spirit Reigns
The competitive nature of the drivers shone through, with playful attempts at overtaking moments adding to the atmosphere. “That was the most fun driver parade we’ve ever had, some dirty driving—it was great fun,” Hamilton exclaimed, while Verstappen shared, "I do think they will have to sweep the track; there is some LEGO debris!"
Craftsmanship and Creativity
The LEGO cars, designed based on the Speed Champions range, were a collaborative effort by a team of 26 designers and engineers at LEGO’s Kladno facility in the Czech Republic. This remarkable fusion of sport and creativity is set to further promote Formula 1’s charm as it continues to enchant fans worldwide.
As the Miami Grand Prix approaches, the excitement surrounding the LEGO parade serves as a vibrant reminder of how traditional motorsport events can evolve to captivate new audiences while celebrating the heritage of the sport.
