Max Verstappen Escapes Penalty After Sprint Qualifying Incident
Max Verstappen has narrowly avoided a grid penalty ahead of the Miami Grand Prix sprint race following an investigation into his slow outlap during SQ2, with Red Bull Racing receiving only a reprimand instead.
Investigation Details
The FIA’s inquiry arose from Verstappen allegedly driving unnecessarily slowly, exceeding the maximum allowed lap time by six seconds. During the investigation, stewards determined this was due to a programming error on Verstappen’s dashboard, rather than reckless driving.
Stewards’ Findings
The stewards ruled that Verstappen maintained a consistent speed throughout the lap and did not impede other drivers, thereby concluding that no dangerous situation was created. They stated, “whilst there has been a breach of the regulations, VER did not drive ‘unnecessarily slowly’ based on the information he had in the car.”
Red Bull’s Responsibility
Despite Verstappen’s clean driving record during the rest of the session, the stewards emphasized that the responsibility lies with the team to ensure accurate timing information is displayed. Red Bull received a reprimand as a result of the incident, highlighting the importance of technological accuracy in Formula 1.
Additional Incident with Lance Stroll
It’s important to note that this incident is separate from a previous confrontation Verstappen had with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, who criticized him on the radio for being in a dangerous position on the racing line. Stroll felt the encounter affected his chances in SQ1, underlining the high-stakes nature of qualifying in Formula 1.
As the Miami Grand Prix weekend unfolds, all eyes will be on the reigning champion and his efforts to convert this reprieve into a competitive advantage on the grid.
