The Switch 2 may not be what some fans expect (Picture: Salvo Lo Cascio and Riccardo Cambò Breccia)
A leading analyst has suggested that the Switch 2 is ‘an iteration rather than a revolution’ and could be £315 or more at launch.
As the new year begins there are few certainties about what is to come for gaming, but one thing you can bet on is lots more rumours about the Switch 2. Nintendo has promised nothing but is widely expected to make an announcement at some point this year, but it may not necessarily be what fans expect.
Exactly how powerful the console will be, and how much it will deviate from the design of the current Switch, is completely unknown, but according to respected analyst Dr Serkan Toto the new format may be closer to a Switch Pro than generally assumed.
That doesn’t mean it will be cheap though, with Toto predicting that the new console will launch at $400 and that it will usher in a price rise to $70, to match other high-end console games.
Currently, most Nintendo first party games are £50, with Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom being an exception at £60. A $70 price tag implies £70 in the UK, as is already standard for many high-profile PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S games.
The original Switch launched at £279 in the UK and $400 is £315. However, as with the cost of the games, the actual UK price would likely be closer to £400 – if Toto is correct.
‘The next system is also likely to be an iteration rather than a revolution. Nintendo might add some bells and whistles to the device, but it will be similar to the current Switch,’ added Toto.
Toto was speaking as part of a feature on GamesIndustry.biz, attempting to predict the trends and events of the coming year.
A number of different analysts and industry figures offered their comments, with many of them predicting an increased use of AI in the next 12 months.

The subject of the Switch 2 came up multiple times, with Lisa Cosmas Hanson from Niko Partners, predicting not just an announcement from Nintendo but also a PS5 Pro reveal from Sony and a ‘new entrant in the dedicated PC gaming handheld segment’.
Tom Wijman of Newzoo went further and predicted a 2024 launch for the Switch 2, alongside a new 3D Mario game and proper digital accounts that allow you to transfer games from the original Switch.
Both these things have already been hinted at, the latter by Nintendo themselves and the 3D Mario game by multiple sources. Although it’s important to point out that Nintendo rumours are traditionally less reliable than those for any other company.
