Niall Horan’s mum says he and Lewis Capaldi were drinking ;Zero Zero all the way’ (Picture: Twitter / Facebook)
Niall Horan’s mother has leaped to her son’ defence after complaints he was drinking alcohol on screen.
The former Direction star visited his hometown for new show Niall Horan’s Homecoming: The Road to Mullingar with Lewis Capaldi – which is sponsored by Guinness – and Sunday’s episode featured a scene where he apparently drank a pint at the local.
Some viewers have criticised the idea that the 20-year-old singer could have been enjoying a drink, and suggested he was setting a bad example to his younger fans.
Now, his mum Maura Gallagher has called into RTÉ Radio 1’s Liveline show to weigh in on the apparent drama.
She told host Joe Duffy: ‘He was holding a pint of Guinness but it was Zero Zero all the way. I can only speak about the part where he came to Mullingar and he was in the pub.
‘I was there and Zero Zero was given and I can’t drink it because I’m celiac, but my husband tasted it and he said it was lovely. Niall wasn’t drinking alcohol and he wasn’t drinking and driving and any of that sort of thing.’

She pointed out that her own pals all loved Sunday’s show and ‘never mentioned Guinness’ in their feedback, while she admitted Niall does drink.
‘He does drink. I think he’s partial to a good pint of Guinness, yes,’ she said – which seems fair to us!
She insisted ‘people are entitled to their opinion’, but the Guinness didn’t register with her at all while she was watching it, as she instead focused on the bond between Niall and Lewis.
‘Well, people are entitled to their opinion but when I heard about it, I couldn’t wait to see Niall and Lewis and when I watched the show the other night, Guinness didn’t come into my head at all,’ she added.
‘I was just laughing at the two of them and their carry-on. The fact that they were sitting there with a couple of glasses of Guinness didn’t register with me. I don’t go deep into things.’
