King Charles III and Prince William have been greeting some of those who have been queuing for hours to pay their respects to the Queen.
This unscheduled walkabout gave us a glimpse of the new King, literally a hands-on style of monarchy.
“Hope you didn’t get frozen last night,”
said King Charles III to one of those waiting
His visit brought a warm response from the crowd who passed on their own condolences for the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. “Sorry for your loss,” said one well-wisher.
Hundreds of people lining the banks of the Thames cheered and applauded as the King and his son appeared.
A nation mourning the sad loss are determined to say its goodbyes, at times, the official queue tracker has warned of waiting times of at least 24 hours to see the Queen in state at Westminster Hall.
Admission to a separate queue for people with accessibility requirements has reopened after being paused for several hours.
Later today, Princes William and Harry and their cousins will take part in a vigil beside the Queen’s coffin, called a catafalque.
