    PM wants EU to get real

    The Sunday Express leads with reports that Boris Johnson will consider “staring the [EU] of access to cheap money on the financial markets,” in the event no long-term trade deal can be agreed before the transition period ends at the turn of the year.

    This time we won’t blink

    The Mail on Sunday’s front page leads with an exclusive interview with Boris Johnson’s chief negotiator, Lord Frost, in which he tells the paper the UK will not “blink” in talks this week. The paper says the peer made it clear “Mr Johnson’s government was adopting a more steely and determined approach than Theresa May’s.”

    MPs unite in defence of free speech

    The Sunday Times reports of Sunday’s blockade of newspaper printing plants by climate change activists, saying ministers “spoke up for press freedom” in the wake of the action that stopped 1.5 million papers being delivered. It quotes the prime minister saying: “A free press is vital in holding the government and other powerful institutions to account.”

    Extinction Rebellion facing ‘organised crime’ curbs 

    The Sunday Telegraph reports the organisation behind the protest, Extinction Rebellion, could be treated as an organised crime group in the future. The paper’s associate editor, Camilla Tominey, complains the campaigners only want a free press if it agrees with their agenda.

    Harry and Meghan in Diana show talk 

    The Sunday Mirror says Harry and Meghan’s Netflix deal “could include a tribute to his mum, Diana.” 

    A source said: “ “It will work as a tribute to Diana and build on all the incredible charity work she has done. Netflix would also love to make a documentary about Diana and it is something they have been pushing for.”

    COVID ‘could be endemic in deprived parts of the country’

    The Observer says a leaked Public Health England document suggests Covid-19 could be endemic in parts of the UK with a combination of severe deprivation, poor housing and large minority ethnic communities. It quotes one section reading: “The overall analysis suggests Bolton, Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale never really left the epidemic phase.”

    WHO warns Europe of OCT-NOV resurgence 

    BBC News says France and Spain have recorded their highest number of daily cases since the spring recently, and the WHO has warned of a potential resurgence of the disease in Europe in October and November.

    Hans Kluge, the director general of the WHO’s Europe office, has likened Covid-19 to a “tornado with a long tail” and warned rising cases among young people could spread the disease to the most vulnerable.

    India reports global record of Covid-19 cases

    Aljazeera says India added more than 90,000 cases of Covid-19, a global record, according to data from the federal health ministry. 

    90,632 new cases were added in the 24 hours to Sunday, according to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, while the number of deaths rose by 1,065 to 70,626.

    Israeli protesters tell Netanyahu to quit as coronavirus cases spike

    Arab News says thousands of Israelis protested outside the residence of PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night, pressing ahead  with a months-long campaign demanding the Israeli leader quit. 

    The protest came as Israel is coping with record levels of coronavirus infections. Demonstrators have been protesting the PM’s handling of the crisis, which has led to soaring unemployment, and they say he should step down while on trial for corruption charges.

    France records over 8,000 new Covid-19 cases for second day in a row

    France24 says French health authorities reported 8,550 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Saturday, down from Friday’s record of 8,975.

    The number of people in France who have died from Covid-19 increased by 12 to 30,698, and the cumulative number of cases now totals 317,706, the health ministry said.

    Singapore reports 40 new Covid-19 infections, including 13 imported

    CNA says Singapore reported 40 new COVID-19 cases as of noon on Sunday, including four in the community and 13 imported cases, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

    This brings the total number of cases in the country to 57,022.

    Melbourne remains in hard lockdown despite drop in Covid-19 cases

    CNN says the Australian city of Melbourne will remain on a strict “Stage 4” lockdown until at least September 28, despite the daily average number of new Covid-19 cases dropping into double-digits.

    Stage 4 restrictions were due to expire on September 14, however the government of Premier Daniel Andrews said today that the city would not be in a safe enough position to do so.
