New daily Covid cases fall by 10k in a week – but it’s far too soon to declare the third wave has peaked
The i says cases of coronavirus in the UK dipped slightly on Thursday compared to a week earlier, although it is too soon for a definite downward trend to be identified.
A total of 39,906 new infections were reported, down by nearly 10,000 from 48,553 on the previous Thursday, causing the line on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard to bend downwards for the first time since April.
The dip could be due to the end of a short peak caused by the greater mixing during the Euro 2020 tournament, and cases are also expected to fall during the school summer holidays, which in England begin this week.
