A mother-of-four drowned while trying to save one of her young children who slipped into a river near a popular waterfall.

Melissa Bagley, 44, was hiking with her family and a friend at Franconia Falls on Tuesday afternoon when her 10-year-old son slipped and fell into one of the pools at the falls.

‘He could not get out of the pool as it was a fast, circulating current,’ stated the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division and Operation Game Thief early Wednesday.

‘The mother jumped into the river to help her child and began to immediately have trouble.’

Melissa Bagley, wife of Everett Police Lt Sean Bagley, died during a family outing along a river near Franconia Falls in New Hampshire

Two of her children also dove into the water to help her and their brother. They managed to rescue their brother, but another brother got stuck in the boulders in the process.

Meanwhile, Bagley’s husband searched for her.

‘He eventually found her on a rock and immediately began CPR,’ stated the division.

‘Unfortunately she was unable to be revived.

    Melissa Bagley was a mother-of-four

‘The father made it over to his son’s location and was able to pull him to safety. He went back to his wife’s location and waited for personnel to arrive.’

Rescue crews who arrived at the falls found the woman deceased and two people with non-life-threatening injuries. The injured people were taken to Littleton Regional Healthcare for evaluation and treatment.

Bagley was picked up by the Mayhew Funeral Home.

Late Wednesday morning, the Everett Police Department in Massachusetts wrote on Facebook that Lt Sean Bagley’s wife died during a family outing in the White Mountain area.

‘Melissa drown while trying to aid one of her children who slipped into the river,’ stated the department.

‘While we appreciate all those who have reached out we ask that Lt Bagley and his family be given the time and space to mourn the death of Melissa.’

It is the latest drowning involving a parent attempting to rescue children. On the Fourth of July, a father-of-three and 9/11 survivor died trying to rescue children who fell into Lake Michigan after a tube that his vessel was pulling flipped.
