Mexican Federation Blames Lawson for Near-Miss with F1 Marshals

In the aftermath of a near-miss involving Liam Lawson and track marshals during the Mexico Grand Prix, Mexico’s motorsport federation has pointed the finger at the Racing Bulls driver. They allege that Lawson failed to slow down adequately under a double yellow flag, which was waved as marshals worked to clear debris from prior incidents.

    Incident Overview: A Dangerous Near-Miss

The near-miss occurred following a collision involving Lawson and Carlos Sainz on lap one of the race. As the marshals intervened to clear the aftermath, Lawson approached Turn 1 where the flags were displayed, prompting a concern for safety.

OMDAI Sport Mexico issued a statement analyzing the incident, providing detailed visual evidence from Lawson’s onboard camera that supported their claims. The federation argued that Lawson’s failure to reduce speed constituted a serious breach of safety protocols.

    Analysis of Lawson’s Actions

According to the federation’s findings, Lawson was clearly visible to the marshals as he approached Turn 1. Their review highlighted that as he took the racing line, Lawson maintained his trajectory even with marshals active on the track, creating a hazardous situation.

“The sequence from the onboard camera shows the proximity of Lawson’s car to the work area,” the statement emphasized. “Despite the marshals still performing their duties, Lawson did not alter his line or reduce his speed.”

    Lawson Responds: A Shocking Experience

Post-race, Lawson expressed his disbelief at the dangerous situation, describing it as “unacceptable.” He recounted a terrifying moment: “I got to Turn 1 and there were two dudes just running across the track. I nearly hit one of them. Honestly, it was so dangerous.”

The driver acknowledged that a miscommunication had likely occurred, stressing the need for clarity regarding marshals’ movements on a live track: “I’ve never experienced that before. It’s pretty unacceptable.”

    Ongoing Investigation

While OMDAI Sport Mexico has made its position clear, it’s worth noting that the FIA is conducting its own investigation into the incident. The lack of immediate inquiry by race stewards has also raised questions among fans and pundits alike.

As the motorsport community awaits further developments, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of safety protocols in Formula 1 racing.
