Manchester United legend Patrice Evra says he’s ‘going to cry in the toilet’ after Liverpool go top of Premier League

Manchester United legend Patrice Evra said he was ‘going to cry in the toilet’ after watching Liverpool go top of the Premier League.

A 2-0 victory at Burnley on Boxing Day, courtesy of goals from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, saw Liverpool retake the lead of the title race.

Shortly after the win at Turf Moor, the Reds’ arch-rivals United did them a favour by beating another title contender in Aston Villa after coming from 2-0 down at half-time to win 3-2.

Had Villa won, they would be level on points with Liverpool but instead Jurgen Klopp’s side are two points clear of everyone, but will be dethroned by Arsenal if they beat West Ham on Thursday night.

Speaking on Amazon Prime Sport’s coverage of United vs Villa, Evra said he rated Liverpool’s title chances very highly – as much as it pained him to admit it.

‘I don’t want to answer [about Liverpool going top]. We have to be neutral, we work on TV!’ the former Red Devils left-back joked.

‘No, but credit to Liverpool and they deserve it. I think they are a serious contender to win the title.

    2023/24 Premier League champions odds:

    Man City – 11/10

    Arsenal – 13/5

    Liverpool – 11/4

    Tottenham – 20/1

    Aston Villa – 22/1

‘We talk a lot about Manchester City and Arsenal and of course City have two games in hand. But Liverpool, I think, they’re back in business.

‘They’re top of the league and they will keep [there] because they’ve got that consistency. They’ve got a great manager.

‘You see, I’m not that neutral, I’m giving so much credit to Liverpool! Now I’m going to cry in the toilet!’

The Reds have lost just one league game this season – away to Tottenham in controversial circumstances – but face a tricky run of fixtures to start the new year, namely Newcastle, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Moreover, they also have to deal with a FA Cup third-round tie against the Gunners, as well as a two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham.
