Man City held against Borussia Dortmund as old pals give Erling Haaland a night off

Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty and Erling Haaland made an inauspicious return to his old stomping ground as Manchester City drew a blank in the Champions League last night.

With City having already booked their place in the knockout stages, Haaland had no chances to add to his impressive goal tally at his former club Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.

The Norwegian had just 13 touches of the ball before being substituted at the break. Although the striker, who has scored 24 goals in all competitions for City this season, took a heavy challenge from former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can, his withdrawal appeared to be a precaution with the Saturday lunchtime trip to Leicester in mind.

It was Can’s foul on Mahrez that handed City a 59th-minute penalty. Mahrez took the penalty himself but although his strike was well-hit, it was at a nice height for Gregor Kobel to make a diving save to his right.

Kobel also made good stops from Ilkay Gundogan and Julian Alvarez with City a shade brighter in the second half.

The action may have been largely forgettable but a draw suited both sides – City winning the group with a game still remaining and Dortmund making sure of second place, with third-placed Sevilla going into the Europa League.
