Love Island star Antigoni Buxton has opened up on her hopes to represent Greece at Eurovision 2023, saying her ‘fingers crossed’ for the opportunity.
Next year, the Eurovision Song Contest is due to take place in Liverpool, following a tight race between the city and Glasgow to be granted the honour by the BBC.
In the lead-up to the event in May, musical acts are gearing up for the chance to take part in the competition – and Antigoni is among the hopeful contenders.
While speaking to Metro.co.uk on the red carpet at last night’s National Television Awards, the reality star – who’s of Greek Cypriot descent – said her ‘fingers are crossed’ that she’ll be taking to the stage at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena.
Explaining the complex process that went into putting herself forward, the 26-year-old said: ‘Fingers crossed! Do you know what, it’s just… I feel like it was like a top secret on how to get in there.
‘I approached Cyprus and Greece. I’m Greek, so if I can represent Greek culture in any way, it would be amazing.’

Antigoni recalled how she got in contact with a record label from Greece called Panik Entertainment who told her: ‘We want to put you forward for it.’
‘I went to the studio, wrote three songs that were like my vibes but Eurovision vibes as well. So yeah, it’s all kind of happening. I really hope… it would be amazing. Because it’s in the UK as well, I feel like I can really do my country justice,’ she said.

Antigoni, whose mother is TV presenter and restaurateur Tonia Buxton, also addressed the recent news that Maya Jama is officially succeeding Laura Whitmore as the new host of Love Island.
‘I love that! Do you know what – absolute queen,’ Antigoni reacted excitedly.
‘I think there would be nobody else that would’ve been good for the job. So I’m glad that decision was made. I love Laura as well, but kind of gutted that I didn’t get to be there with Maya too!’

The singer pondered over what Maya is going to be like when she takes over the role, expressing her belief that she’s ‘going to bring the sauce’.
‘I think she’s going to revamp the whole show with her like… do you know what I mean? She’s just so beautiful and good vibes and I think she’s going to give it a new energy.’
