Liverpool humble Man City with a statement win

Liverpool humbled Man City with a statement win at Anfield – a huge performance for Liverpool. They move 11 points clear of Manchester City.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot to Sky Sports: “Yeah [it was almost a perfect match], and if you look at work-rate I think it was perfect. The amount of chances we miss made it tight at the end. But maybe that’s nice for matches like this. It should be like this. But it would have been nicer to score the second goal earlier.”

That’s 18 wins in 20 games across all competitions for Arne Slot’s Liverpool. It’s seven games without a win for Pep Guardiola’s City and four consecutive defeats in the Premier League. This is first time he’s gone 7 games without a win.

Liverpool are not only 11 points clear of Manchester City, they are nine points clear of Arsenal and Chelsea in second and third place.

Liverpool FC were not flattered by the margin of victory, which leaves them 11 points clear of City, who have not won for seven matches – losing their past four league games.

The key points from Liverpool vs Man City

Virgil van Dijk had headed against the post while City keeper Stefan Ortega, in for Ederson, had already been in constant action – before Liverpool went ahead after 12 minutes.

But the key points from Liverpool vs Man City came at 12 mins, following relentless pressure by the Reds, first the closing down by the defensive bloc, then Trent’s pass, followed class from Mo Salah.

OPENER: Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo celebrates scoring a back-post opener at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah showed perfect vision to pick out Cody Gakpo for a simple finish in front of the Kop as City were unable to cope with Liverpool’s relentless attacking intensity.

Van Dijk headed wide when it seemed easier to score and Liverpool created more chances when, as City hinted at a belated recovery, the league leaders deservedly increased their lead with 12 minutes left.

Liverpool substitute Darwin Nunez hustled Ruben Dias into an error. Luis Diaz cashed in and was brought down by Ortega, with Salah making no mistake from the spot after missing against Real Madrid in midweek.

A touch of class from Pep

Pep Guardiola and his players head over to applaud the fans. Again, he puts up six fingers to represent his six Premier League titles and his fans respond in kind with applause for their team.

A touch of class from Pep

The City boss claps the whole of Anfield as he heads down the tunnel. He knows how to play up to it, you have to say that much.

MOTM Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dyke spoke to Sky Sports and in their positive mood joke around with pundits.

Arne Slot’s pace-setters, fresh from beating Champions League holders Real Madrid, were in rampant mood and subjected City to a relentless barrage from the kick-off.
