Labour waters down £28bn green investment pledge
Labour has adjusted its commitment to investing £28 billion per year in green industries if it comes into power, citing the need for responsible handling of public finances.
In 2021, Labour initially pledged to invest £28 billion annually until 2030 in green projects. However, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves now states that the investment will be gradually increased starting from a potential election win in 2024, ultimately reaching £28 billion per year by 2027.
During an interview with the BBC, Reeves emphasised the importance of fiscal responsibility after the Conservative government’s impact on the economy. She stressed the need to avoid recklessness in spending.
Speaking on Radio 4’s Today program, Reeves also highlighted the significance of financial stability in light of increased prices and interest rates. Factors such as the war in Ukraine have contributed to soaring inflation, leading the Bank of England to raise interest rates in an effort to curb rising prices. These developments have made borrowing more expensive.
The mini-budget presented by former Prime Minister Liz Truss last year, which included unfunded tax cuts amounting to billions of pounds, caused financial market turbulence and further contributed to the rise in interest rates.
