The result means Arsenal stay at the summit with seven games to play, but on goal difference above Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.
Mo Salah fired in an 82nd-minute penalty to set up a nervy finale at Old Trafford but the hosts held on.
This result could prove pivotal in this season’s title race.
Liverpool needed to win to go back to the top of the table after both Man City and Arsenal won yesterday.
For Man Utd it will prove a moral-boosting victory as they go into the final run-in for the remainder of the campaign.
