Trailblazing Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough Passes Away at 73
The Cook County Clerk’s office is mourning the loss of a true public service champion as Karen Yarbrough, a Maywood Democrat who served in public office for over two decades, has passed away at the age of 73. Ms. Yarbrough, the first Black person and first woman to serve as Cook County clerk, left behind a legacy of dedicated service and trailblazing leadership.
Ms. Yarbrough, who passed away surrounded by her family and husband, former Maywood Mayor Henderson Yarbrough, had been hospitalized and undergoing treatment for a serious medical condition. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of many, with Chief Deputy Clerk Cedric Giles describing her as one of the brightest lights in the public service arena in Cook County and the State of Illinois.
Throughout her career, Ms. Yarbrough held various elected positions, including serving as the Cook County recorder of deeds and as a state representative. She was also actively involved in Democratic Party politics, working for both the Cook County Democratic Party and Democratic Party of Illinois.
Despite facing scrutiny for allegations of patronage hiring, Ms. Yarbrough’s dedication to public service and her commitment to helping people never wavered. Her impact on the community and her tireless efforts to improve the lives of those around her will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Condolences poured in from Illinois elected officials, with Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton praising Ms. Yarbrough as a dedicated public servant who paved the way for many. Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi remembered her as a pioneer who inspired others through her public service work.
Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted Ms. Yarbrough’s legacy as a pathfinder for future officials and a tireless advocate for communities. Her passion for ensuring that all communities receive the support they deserve will be greatly missed.
The passing of Karen Yarbrough marks the end of an era in Cook County politics, but her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations of public servants.
