Zoe Saldana shines light on illegal immigration in ‘Absence of Eden’

The Absence of Eden: Zoe Saldaña and Marco Perego’s Powerful Immigration Film

Hollywood power couple Zoe Saldaña and Marco Perego have teamed up to bring audiences a gripping new film, “The Absence of Eden,” which delves into the heart-wrenching realities of immigration from both sides of the Mexican border.

The film follows Saldaña’s character, Esmee, as she is forced to flee Mexico and becomes a guardian for a young girl in a group led by a “coyote.” Perego, in his directorial debut, vividly portrays the dangers faced by illegal immigrants crossing into the US, particularly women.

In Arizona, Garrett Hedlund’s ICE officer Shipp embarks on a complicated relationship with an immigrant, leading to deadly consequences.

While immigration is a hot-button issue in today’s society, Saldaña and Perego aim to humanize the experience through their film. In a recent Zoom interview, Saldaña shared, “I didn’t want to live in the politics of it. I just wanted to try to understand a day in the life of a person who is in an environment that is not safe or working for them.”

The couple, who have three children of their own, bring a personal touch to the film, reflecting the struggles many immigrants face on their journeys for a better life.

“The Absence of Eden” is set to open on April 12, offering audiences a poignant look at the human side of immigration and the sacrifices made in pursuit of a brighter future.
