Junk food TV ads banned before 9pm

Junk food TV ads banned before 9pm

Junk food TV advertisements will be banned pre-9pm. The ban includes foods that are high in sugar, salt and fat.

The government’s ban will also include new rules on online promotion, but firms selling junk food will still be able to run websites.

Boris Johnson had previously said obesity – which affects more than a quarter of UK adults – has to be tackled.

Initially, there was a proposal of a total ban on online adverts, but following a consultation, it was scaled back. Food companies said banning any form of junk food advertising would be disproportionate.

The UK population’s weight has risen since the early 1990s, with more than 60% of the adult population now overweight or obese, according to NHS Digital.

The government is keen to prevent young people from consuming too much junk food and since 2018, manufacturers have had to pay extra tax on high-sugar drinks.
