Janet Street-Porter has laid into the new Beckham documentary, and says she will not be watching it.
The Netflix docu-series, self-titled Beckham, follows David Beckham’s illustrious footballing career with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and latterly LA Galaxy.
While it is a sports documentary, as it’s the Beckhams – obviously – the conversation goes elsewhere, into he and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham’s high-profile relationship since they were first linked in 1997.
‘I love watching documentaries about brilliant sportsmen, and women,’ shared Janet, 76, on today’s episode of Loose Women.
‘I would find that aspect of it fascinating,’ she explained. But what she doesn’t have time for is a ‘manicured’ depiction of their 24-year marriage.
‘But what I’m not interested in is a PR, very manicured portrait of their marriage and their relationship, which, at the end of the day, the press only give us one view of the Beckhams – but the Beckhams only give us what they want us to see.

‘It’s very tightly controlled, because ultimately it’s all about brand protection and maximising their income,’ she added, to applause in the audience.
The documentary was made by Beckham’s production company, but filmmakers were said to have been invited to probe the famous couple on anything – including the alleged affair Rebecca Loos claimed she had with Becks in Spain when he was playing for Real Madrid.
Former TV star Rebecca worked as David’s personal assistant, and in 2004 she made headline news with the affair claim.

The ex-footballer has always denied the scandalous rumours, calling them ‘ludicrous’ and seemingly still denies them 20 years on.
On watching the documentary – in which David dubbed the headlines back then as ‘horrible’ – Rebecca has now accused Becks of ‘playing the victim.’
‘It’s all, “poor me”. He needs to take responsibility,’ she told the Mail on Sunday in a recent interview, talking about David.
‘He can say whatever he likes of course and I understand he has an image to preserve, but he is portraying himself as the victim and he’s making me look like a liar, like I’ve made up these stories.

‘He is indirectly suggesting that I’m the one who has made Victoria suffer,’ she said.
Rebecca agreed with David’s words the stories were ‘horrible’ but also claimed that they were ‘true.’
She then accused the footballer of misleading the public, and dragging the whole thing back up and ‘affecting [her] reputation.’
Rebecca also claimed that while she was having the alleged affair with the father-of-five, he also got cosy with a Spanish model.
Meanwhile, in the documentary Victoria said the time around the affair accusations was the couple’s ‘hardest period’.
‘It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us,’ she said.
‘Here’s the thing – we were against each other if I’m completely honest.’
David also dubbed the headlines ‘difficult to deal with’ as he explained: ‘I think we both felt at the time that we were, not losing each other, but drowning.
‘I don’t know how we got through it, in all honesty,’ he added.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
