Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney has opened up about her childhood poverty and soaring to fame and success as a self-made trans woman.

The 19-year-old plays Elle Argent, a student who is navigating life, love, and friendships after transferring from Truham boys’ school to Higgs school for girls in the LGBTQ+ Netflix blockbuster.

Since the beloved drama, which was recently renewed for another two seasons, landed on the Bridgerton streamer, Yasmin has become an in-demand actress, most recently bagging a role in David Tennant’s Doctor Who specials.

Taking stock of her success, Yasmin reflected on the difficulties she faced growing up, explaining that she ‘came from poverty’ and suffered from homelessness.

She explained: ‘We came from poverty, lived on a council estate. I remember me and my mum were actually homeless for two weeks, living from hotel to hotel.

‘But I was still going to school every morning – barely able to afford school meals.’

Now, though, Yasmin lives in a ‘very nice three-bedroom place in London’ stating that her soaring fame is ‘unheard of’ for someone from her background.

She continued to Elle UK: ‘It’s me and my dog. I pay my own bills. I take out my own trash, and do my own dishes.

‘At this age! It’s unheard of that somebody from Manchester, a self-made trans queer, has their own very nice three-bedroom place in London.’

Yasmin fans don’t have too much longer to wait to see her back on our screens in Heartstopper, with season 2 confirmed to launch on August 3.

While the plot details have been kept under wraps, Yasmin previously teased: ‘There are so many things that happen with Elle this season that you’re not ready for.

‘I would say Elle is different in that she’s more confident. She surrounds herself with people that elevate her.’

Similarly, Yasmin has confessed she can’t spill too much about her character Rose in Doctor Who, joking: ‘There are spies. If I talk about the Whoniverse, it’s over.’
