The Times says when the sleeping mine clearance workers were woken to be told that gunmen were moving among their dormitories, few realised they were in mortal danger.
“My friend started shaking my shoulder, whispering for me to wake up,” Abdul Qarim, a 40-year-old worker for the Halo Trust, recalled. “He kept saying the Taliban had arrived. I said: ‘So what?’ The Taliban often arrive’.”
