Grange Hill creator Sir Phillip Redmond has confirmed that the children’s drama series will be making a comeback.

The series, which ran for 30 years before airing its last episode in 2008, was well known for its gritty storylines covering racism, shoplifting, and addiction.

Reports claim that although the plot of the reboot has been kept under wraps Phil revealed that the based on the character Jessica Samuels, who was the rebellious head of the Grange Hill student action group in the TV series – an idea inspired by actress Sara Sugarman who played Jessica as a teen on the original show.

‘Sara reached out, and that hit a light bulb in my head,’ he told Deadline.

‘I thought, “Why don’t I look beyond the main characters, which is obvious, and we’ll have them all there for nostalgia, but where did Jessica go?”‘

Despite playing the key character in the series, Sara won’t be reprising her role, but it was revealed that the film will definitely feature surprise appearances from the like of Todd Carty, Sheila Chandra and Sean Maguire.

The popular show began in 1978, tacking a vast range of hard-hitting storylines, which was a first in children’s television.

Show creator Phil spoke about the revival plans last year on BBC Breakfast.

‘We’ve only just started working through the script and we go into production this year for release next year so if anyone wants to form an orderly queue in the casting line, they can just wait a couple of months that would be great,’ he said.

In July 2022, four of the show’s stars met up for an impromptu reunion 44 years since the show first aired.

Lee MacDonald, Zammo McGuire, reunited with his co-stars Todd Carty, who played Tucker, Janet actress Simone Nylander, and Erkan Mustafa, who starred as Roland.

The 54-year-old actor posted the snap to Twitter with the words: ‘Mini #grangehill reunion with Tucker, Roland and Janet ❤️❤️❤️ x.’

It came ahead of a special episode of the Reunion on BBC Radio with the cast of Grange Hill which aired last August.
