From King of the Jungle Sam Thompson to Swiftie favourite Travis Kelce, Golden Retriever boyfriends are back in the spotlight.
We’ve got a lot of love for these playful, sweet, loyal, loving and eager to please men – just like the dogs they’re named after.
But now, it’s not just one loveable breed we’re comparing our partners to.
The trend has since grown beyond happy-go-lucky retrievers, to several others, with social media users finding similarities between their baes and certain canines.
Although it may sound like an insult (and in some cases it might just be that) depending on the breed, can be quite endearing.
Which leads us to ask: what breed is your beau? Let’s find out.
Golden Retriever
The dog that started the trend and the most popular. Women started posting videos of their Golden Retriever boyfriends in 2021 which showed them doing adorkable things like catching snowflakes with their tongues and just generally being really lovely.
Jamie Johnston, the founder of the Mattr dating app, said the popularity of this type of boyfriend might be because we all want to live stress-free. ‘The desirability of GRB might also be due to how stressful our current 100mph lives are along with the mental health crisis in young people.
‘Do women aspire to the bad boy type who’s not going to treat them right and cause unnecessary anxiety and stress? Do they have the mental capacity for that at this age?’
German Shepherd
TikToker @viviankkjh shared a short video of her shirtless husband cutting up meat in the kitchen, and explained some of the qualities of a German Shepherd partner. ‘He’s not energetic or super friendly but he’s loyal,’ she wrote. ‘He doesn’t like strangers and he calls me on my bullsh*t.’
In what sounds like a very strong warning, she adds: ‘He would bite anyone who tried to hurt me. He gives me tough love when I need it but will be the first one to comfort me when I’m sad. He doesn’t like a lot of people but he loves his ‘people’ more than anything’.
If your boyfriend acts like a bodyguard – in a non-toxic way, of course – perhaps he’s a German Shepherd, since this breed is known for being courageous and loyal, making them excellent as guard and police dogs.
They’re a large breed and have high intelligence although they require a high level of exercise to keep them stimulated…
Chihuahua
In response to the aforementioned German Shepherd boyfriend video, one woman in the comments made the internet laugh by declaring her own partner a Chihuahua.
They’re small (hello, short king), sassy and loud, and some may even say they’re an acquired taste. They absolutely love attention, so you might often be in his shadow.
Chihuahua boyfriends will be loved for their feisty persona – but have their fair share of haters too.
English Bulldog
If you’re with an English Bulldog type of guy, we feel for you.
It’s hard not to fall in love with these adorable pooches, with their sturdy stance, and sweet nature.
But, if you’ve not had a full night sleep since you met him, thanks to his earth-shaking snorting, he’s definitely an English Bulldog.
Husky
A husky boyfriend is either your perfect match, or your worst nightmare.
They’re big, beautiful but as, TikToker Shannon Foody says, they can be a bit much for some people.
‘He’s the kind of guy you fantasise about,’ she says. ‘He’s really athletic and he’s a showstopper and he’s got some spice to him.
‘But he’s the kind of boyfriend where in practice, he’s almost too much for everybody.
‘He thinks that a 10 mile run in the morning is a great date. He’s going to want you to do iron man.’
If you’re boyfriend is a husky he’s high energy, mischievous and loves being around you (and people in general), but he’s easily bored – and needs a lot of attention.
