Germany floods: Government defends preparation as it counts costs of extreme flooding which left 160 dead
The i says Germany has defended the way it handled last week’s flash floods that killed scores of people and left towns and villages destroyed.
Interior minister Horst Seehofer rejected criticism that the government had failed to sufficiently warn people after questions were raised about why people were unprepared for the severe weather.
Michael Theurer, a senior member of the opposition Free Democrats (FDP), told the DPA news agency that the toll revealed a “systemic failure”. Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, chief of the left-wing Linke party, has called for Mr Seehofer to step down.
