Manchester United legend Gary Neville says he’s ‘really impressed’ with Arsenal’s move to sign David Raya as it shows the club’s ambition.
The Spaniard is set to sign for the Gunners after they agreed a deal with Brentford for the 27-year-old.
Though the Bees were seeking around £40m, Arsenal are thought to have agreed a fee worth around £30m.
Raya will compete with Ramsdale for the no.1 spot and the move has raised eyebrows in some quarters.
Though there’s no doubting Raya’s quality, it was a surprise to see Arteta move for a goalkeeper that had been first choice at a rival Premier League club.
But Neville says that shows Arsenal’s ambition and says Ramsdale’s ‘erratic’ performances at the tail-end of the last campaign convinced Arteta he needed competition.

‘That actually really impressed me the other day because I thought, although Ramsdale did struggle a little bit in the last five or 10 games and I actually liked Raya at Brentford, so I thought the idea of signing him was another sort of message that he’s not taking what happened last season lightly,’ Neville told the Overlap.
‘The things that caused them a problem were minor details in the last 10 games, but Ramsdale was one of those issues in those last 10 games.
‘He was erratic and you can’t have that with a keeper with 10 games to go. You can’t have an erratic goalkeeper.’
