Games Inbox: Modern Warfare 2 campaign review, Bayonetta 3 excitement, and Parasite Eve remake

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – have you played it? (pic: Activision)

The Wednesday letters page considers the strange case of Metal Gear Solid’s English translation, as one reader bets on Elden Ring for GOTY.

    Waste of money
Like many, I’ve been playing the Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign, because I pre-ordered, and I have come to the conclusion that it’s… kind of bad? The graphics are good, despite all the glitches, but it’s just so boring! There’s what I thought were going to be neat homages to All Ghilled Up and the gunship level from the original game, but they go on forever and even when they are over it’s just back to more sniping and low excitement combat.

It’s trying to be tense, and it kind of is at first… until you realise the logic of what’s going on and how simple and limited it all is. The original Modern Warfares knew to get in and get out quickly, so that you never realised how you were being manipulated (in a good way). The new game seems either too dumb or too full of itself for that.

I really liked the first Modern Warfare reboot too, but this has a much worse story and virtually nothing to do with the original Modern Warfare 2. It’s strange to play something that looks so good, and has had so much work put into it, and yet the whole thing feels limp and unexciting. It doesn’t really matter because I bought the game for the multiplayer, but it all seems a big waste of someone’s money.

    Newcomer friendly
I’ve always been on the fence about Bayonetta games, despite owning a Wii U and Bayonetta 2 getting decent reviews when big Wii U releases were few and far between. I got the impression that I would find them annoyingly difficult and give up.

Having read your review of Bayonetta 3 I think I may finally jump in and see what all the fuss is about. Great review.
    John Atkinson

GC: Thanks. It’s really not a particularly difficult game either, and we were playing it on Normal.

    Third time lucky
I am very happy to read that Bayonetta 3 is another excellent entry for the series. I must admit, like GC, I had my doubts. Not only has Platinum’s output lately been poor compared to their former high standards but I also didn’t think the trailers for Bayonetta 3 looked very good. Somehow the graphics and gameplay seemed off to me compared to 1 and 2.

Still, I trust GC’s review and can’t wait to play Bayonetta 3 now, after all it was your reviews of the first two games (which are now among my favourite games ever) that got me into the series in the first place!
    Barry

GC: That’s good to hear. The marketing has been poor so far, you’re right. Despite paying for the sequels Nintendo, or at least Nintendo of America, has never seemed to know what to do with the series.

    Interpret vs. translate
I have to disagree with Ghostcaller and his suggestion a Metal Gar Solid movie wouldn’t work without Kojima. In my opinion, the best dialogue in any Metal Gear Solid game is the original PlayStation one and that’s down to the American translator, Jeremy Blaustein.

There is a great article about it on Polygon and ever since reading it it’s helped me understand why the hell it’s so hard to follow what’s going on in all the subsequent Metal Gear Solid games.
    TommyFatFingers

GC: It’s a good article. Kojima’s response to hearing it wasn’t a 1:1 translation has always seemed wrong-headed.

    4th Birthday
Did the Inbox magic work again? New Parasite Eve? I’ve only played and never beaten the second game but that’s due to the last boss and my ineptitude at the combat but if they’re bringing it back then remake that one. It’s great even now. I’ve replayed it on the PlayStation 3 and, again, have failed at the last hurdle but had a great time doing so.

As for the guy that wants the characters in Resident Evil to get superpowers? Play Parasite Eve. She’s already got them and it plays very similar to the early Resi games with some light role-playing elements chucked in for good measure.
    Bobwallett

GC: If there are licensing issues, as it sounds like there might be, remasters or remakes could be impossible. Our bet is on a new game.

    A dog’s life
A bit disappointed with GC’s Resident Evil Village Winters’ Expansion review. I am still looking forward to it, however, and have got it on pre-order. The main thing for me is playing Village again in third person. The way Resident Evil should be!

In response to LastYearsModel’s letter on Tuesday. I think the video of the dog is deliberately misleading on Capcom’s part. They know how popular the dog is with the fans and what they showed would cause an uproar! My theory from the footage shown is either it is not the same one or you have a certain amount of time to reach the dog before it dies.

I hope I am right as having it helping you out later is a memorable part of the game.
    Tony- -1975(PSN ID)
Currently playing – A Plague Tale: Requiem (PS5) and Return To Monkey Island (Switch)

GC: It was in the demo we played and there seemed no way to help it. It is possible that could change by launch though.

    Gaming multiverse
Just an idea I thought would be good for multiplayer games. What if different games let other games use each other’s maps?

You could be playing Halo on a Sea Of Thieves island, Fortnite on a Call Of Duty map or Forza racing around Mario Kart tracks. They could be old maps from older games in newer games.

    Currently playing: Portal 2

    A good crop
So Elden Ring is an obvious contender for game of the year and now so too is Bayonetta 3, surprisingly (if only because of Platinum’s recent run of games) but where does that leave God Of War Ragnarök? It did seem to be Elden Ring’s main rival but I’m sensing that it’s no groundbreaker, based on the previews.

Everything seems to depend on how the story turns out as I don’t think it’s going to be winning many awards for the relatively unchanged gameplay or even the graphics, which while good are naturally limited by being on PlayStation 4.

Despite only having played Elden Ring I still think it’s going to walk away with the majority of awards, including from GC. God Of War, I think, will just be seen more of the same, and could even mess up its ending. Bayonetta 3 I admittedly know nothing about, but the pacing issues seemed a problem it is also a sequel that is obviously similar to what came before.

You could argue that Elden Ring is just Dark Souls 4 with a different name, and I do agree it’s a shame how every big game is basically a sequel, but at least Elden Ring is technically something new. Even as a fan of From’s work it seemed new and exciting to me, in terms of the open world.

So that’s my prediction for the game of the year. Although, really, we should just be glad there are three good contenders, because during the summer games drought we were in worst year ever territory.

    Inbox also-rans
You know, if it wasn’t for the current crisis, and them not being available in the UK, I would’ve been tempted to get one of those real Mario Karts ‘for my kids’. We’ve got a tortoise and a fruit bowl, what else could you need?
    Tempo

The Resident Evil 1 remake was 20 years ago?! Thanks for making me feel old GC… Just goes to prove it’s quality though, that it’s still being re-released today and is so good a new remake isn’t really necessary yet.

    This week’s Hot Topic
Halloween is almost upon us, so for this weekend’s Inbox we want to know what’s the best ever survival horror game and what upcoming title has the best chance of beating.

Big budget horror games are rare but there’s suddenly a lot of them on the way, including remakes of Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, and Silent Hill 2, as well as The Callisto Protocol, Alan Wake 2, all the other Silent Hill games – plus many others.

Are you excited about the new releases, and do you think this will usher in a new era of successful horror games or is it just a blimp? If you’re not interested in any of the new games, what is it about your personal favourite that you enjoy so much?
