Gambling white paper: Gamblers losing £1,000 a day to face checks
New and tougher regulations on gambling are expected to be introduced, including checks on gamblers who lose £1,000 in a day or £2,000 over 90 days. The exact implementation of these checks remains unknown.
The government’s white paper, outlining the new regulations, has been delayed multiple times since 2020. Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer believes her “balanced” proposal will still allow people to gamble safely, but will also protect the most vulnerable.
The rise of smartphones has made gambling “ubiquitous”, providing access to betting around the clock, Frazer said. The new regulations will also include a mandatory levy on gambling firms, which will fund addiction treatment and research, although the details of its management are yet to be clarified.
