When is Freedom Day in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
The Metro says: Today is Freedom Day in England – the day on which most of the remaining Covid restrictions which have been in place throughout the pandemic are lifted.
Boris Johnson confirmed on Monday July 12 that ‘Freedom Day’ could go ahead as planned, meaning that nightclubs can reopen for the first time in 16 months, while laws around face masks and social distancing have been removed – although such measures are still advised in crowded spaces.
The rules are being eased in spite of spiralling infections in the UK – with more than 50,000 cases per day having been recorded in recent days, although hospitalisations and deaths remain lower than in the previous waves following the rollout of the vaccination programme.
‘It is absolutely vital that we proceed now with caution,’ Mr Johnson said. ‘And I cannot say this powerfully or emphatically enough: This pandemic is not over.’
