Freedom day: Britain’s great gamble with Covid unlocking begins
The Times says sixteen months, 128,000 deaths and several very long lockdowns ago, Boris Johnson stood in front of a podium. “This is the worst public health crisis for a generation,” he said, solemnly. “I must level with you . . . many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time.”
Yesterday, Johnson again stood in front of a podium and again, solemnly, addressed the nation. The prime minister was announcing England’s freedom day, but there was no pretence that he was also announcing a victory day.
