Freddie Flintoff will return to TV ‘this winter’.

Former England cricket captain Freddie, 45, was hospitalised last December after he suffered facial injuries in an accident while shooting for Top Gear at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.

The sporting star is gearing up to resume filming Field of Dreams, which sees Freddie go on the hunt for untapped cricketing talent.

According to new reports, Freddie will start filming the BBC series’ second run once autumn is over.

A source told the Mirror: ‘Everyone is thrilled and relieved Freddie is gearing up to get back to work. We know how much this series meant to him.

‘It was a passion project that was also loved by the viewers, so it’s great it will mark his return to the screen after what must have been an extraordinarily difficult time.’

Freddie confirmed last year that Field of Dreams would return, saying: ‘Working with the boys was one of the most incredible experiences of my life but the work is not finished yet!’

It comes after Freddie was spotted at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens on Friday to watch England’s opening one-day international against New Zealand from the home team’s balcony.

It is believed to be the first time Freddie has been photographed in public since suffering his injuries.

The injuries from Freddie’s Top Gear crash, which brought the filming of series 34 to a halt, appeared evident on his face.

Freddie was airlifted to hospital last December after he was involved in the accident and has kept a low profile ever since.

A statement from BBC Studios earlier this year said it had ‘concluded its investigation into the accident at the Top Gear Test Track in Surrey last December, which regrettably injured presenter Freddie Flintoff’.

It continued: ‘We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery. Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34 of Top Gear at this time.

‘We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year.

‘This has also impacted the production team, who we continue to support.’

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Freddie’s reps and the BBC for comment.
