Flood warnings and alerts as heavy rain batters Britain ahead of sunshine spells

Dozens of flood warnings were in force across England after hours and hours of relentless rain throughout Monday and overnight.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain for Newcastle, parts of York, Middlesbrough and Scarborough, ending at 9am.

Flooding of homes and businesses, and problems with bus and train services are possible in these areas amid the rainfall.

Travel disruptions are expected to continue mainly across the south-west and the midlands amid rising river levels, resulting in devastating flooding of roads, paths and land.

This comes in tandem with another yellow weather warning for ice across parts of northern Scotland until 11am today.

This morning people should still be wary of icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Floodwaters also blocked multiple railway lines yesterday, resulting in ‘significant disruptions’, with Great Western Railways journeys being diverted and delayed.

Passengers were seen queuing for taxis from Bristol Temple Meads railway station to nearby cities in freezing temperatures as no replacement buses were available.

Providing much relief to people, rain is set to gradually ease across England and Wales today.

Forecasters said spells of sunshine will pop out from behind the clouds elsewhere, but cold, with a few wintry showers in the northeast.

Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge said the risk of snow is now lessening and would ‘more or less be confined to Scottish mountains’ by the end of the week.

‘Temperatures are rising from below average now to above average,’ he added.

‘Overnight (on Monday), in parts of the north, frost remains still a risk. Tomorrow (today) could see frost from Scotland down into central southern England.

‘In general, conditions will be more wet and windy.’

Two yellow weather warnings for rain and ice are still in place for today.
