A flight attendant has revealed he’d never drink coffee on a plane. And after hearing the reason, we’ve also been put off for life.
The cabin crew member, known online only as Kevin, frequently uses his TikTok (@ichbinvin) to spill the tea on the inner workings of the aviation industry.
In a recent post, Kevin gave his take on a recent Reddit thread about the ‘dirty little secrets’ of air travel.
One comment on the thread, from someone claiming to be a pilot, advised never drinking the coffee, because the water tank is rarely cleaned. Kevin backed this up, adding an even more disgusting reason.
‘The fact the tanks rarely get cleaned where the water’s in should be the least of your concern,’ he said in a video that’s been watched more 164,000 times.
‘For me, it’s always been the way that flight attendants have to clean coffee pots.
‘For whatever reason, we’re not supposed to empty coffee pots in drains, we’re supposed to dump them down the toilet.’
He continued: ‘When you take a coffee pot and dump it in the toilet, in order to not make a huge mess everywhere, you kind of have to get a little close to the toilet.
‘And I imagine that there’s some kind of backsplash of particles, bacteria, whatever that goes directly back into the coffee pot which gets put right back into the coffee maker.’
This problem doesn’t matter if you’re a fancy first class flyer where there’s usually a dedicated coffee machine. *Sighs.
Kevin also warned holidaymakers that although large items of rubbish are removed from the seat pocket in front of you, these spaces are not thoroughly cleaned, so ‘reach inside at your own risk’.
He’s found used nappies, tissues, loose hair and wrappers ‘of all kinds’ wedged in the crevices.
Kevin’s warnings come after another TikTok flight attendant, Esther, advised throwing a bottle of water under the bed every time you enter a new hotel room.
The reason? It can help you to figure out if someone’s hiding under there without looking. If it doesn’t come out of the other side, she recommended exercising caution.
