Festival of Remembrance: Tribute paid to Queen Elizabeth

The Royal Family paid tribute to the Invictus Games and the incredible support it provides to injured and ill military veterans at the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday night, yet one thing caused fury amongst royal fans online.

Prince Harry’s name was not mentioned at all by the Firm, even though Invictus was Harry’s brainchild, in conjunction with the Royal Foundation, and he has been the face of the Games ever since it was founded in 2014.

Penny Robinson posted on X, formerly Twitter, following the Festival: “How can you have a tribute to the success of the @Invictusgames without mentioning Prince Harry? I guess the family couldn’t cope with his name being said out loud!”

Others agreed with her, as in the comments underneath another account wrote: “If I had to guess, I’d say they wanted to but this was as close as they could get. The Royal Family is ridiculous.”

Another said: “Whatever your thoughts on current Royal affairs, it was Prince Harry who founded Invictus Games, which has helped numerous wounded service people, and that should never be forgotten. Thank you.”

However, there were some that pointed out that Harry founded the Games in partnership with the Firm, specifically the Royal Foundation which was established by Harry and Prince William.

One account posted: “It was maybe a little strange but H[arry] alone did not start the games he is though the one associated with it. I was presently surprised it was even mentioned so that in itself is a good thing.”

Another said: “It would have been the right thing to include “created by PH” … but I think he would be the first to say, ‘this is about those vets, not about me’ and be totally proud of them.”

Senior royals including the King and Queen, the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Anne were at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday night to pay tribute to those who have served in the military.

At the beginning of the night Charles looked emotional as he unveiled new statues of his late parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, created the mark the 150th anniversary of the venue.

On Remembrance Sunday the King will lay the first wreath at the Cenotaph memorial in central London, as the royals gather to pay their respects to British and Commonwealth soldiers who sacrificed their lives serving their country.

Yesterday on Remembrance Day, November 11th, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps laid a wreath at 11am to mark the moment in 1918 when the Armistice was signed, ending World War One.

Sunday will see the Royal Family at the Cenotaph, where they will be joined by the Prime Minister and other senior politicians, defence chiefs and faith leaders.

Following the two-minute silence at 11am almost 10,000 veterans and 800 members of the Armed Forces will march past the National War Memorial.
