Leaked email ‘proves’ PM lied over evacuation of pets in Afghanistan
Off the back of the PMQs today, the prime minister is facing further scandal after an email has been leaked that suggests PM Boris Johnson authorised the evacuation of animals from Afghanistan during the fall of Kabul.
The email, leaked by a whistleblower, contradicts the PM’s previous claims that it was “nonsense” that he intervened in the evacuation of the Nowzad charity – run by former Royal Marine Pen Farthing. The leaked email is from an official in minister Zac Goldsmith’s office and suggests he was personally involved. Its one of a number of emails released by a select committee.
The August 2020 message to an official in the Foreign Office says: “Charity Nowzad, run by an ex-Royal Marine, has received a lot of publicity and the PM has just authorised their staff and animals to be evacuated.”
When asked in December if he had prioritised animals over people in the evacuation of Kabul, Mr Johnson said: “That is complete nonsense.”
Dec 7th.
Question: Did you intervene to get Pen Farthing’s animals out?
PM: No. That is complete nonsense. https://t.co/vO43tnBe0P— Beth Rigby (@BethRigby) January 26, 2022
In other news, emails just published by @CommonsForeign re the Afghan evacuation refer to the PM giving personal authorisation for the Nowzad animals to be evacuated.
This was denied by No10 spokesman. pic.twitter.com/tvzx8Gi6vG
