Dominic Raab: Foreign Secretary struggles to give clarity on chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal
The i says Dominic Raab attempted to reset the narrative around his performance in response to the UK’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan as he told MPs he was jetting off to the region to hold talks over the future of the country.
The Foreign Secretary’s appearance in front of a specially convened Foreign Affairs Select Committee was a much-needed moment for him to demonstrate he had taken control over the situation, having suffered weeks of criticism following his decision to remain on holiday during the peak of the crisis.
But Mr Raab’s efforts were quickly punctured when Tom Tugendhat, chair of the committee, read out a Foreign Office “principal risk report” from 22 July, which revealed the US decision to pull out had precipitated a faster deterioration than expected.
