The Sun – Do the hokey chokey!

    September 11, 2024

The Sun leads on the early release of 1,700 prisoners in a government bid to ease prison overcrowding. The paper says the early release of the prisoners shows the UK’s justice system has become ‘a joke’.

Elsewhere, the front page reports the Strictly Come Dancing tour has been axed after a ‘bust-up’.

We’ll be locked up again in no time, admit prisoners freed by Starmer’s controversial early release scheme

PRISONERS have admitted that most lags will be locked up again in no time after being freed by Starmer’s controversial scheme.

Around 1,700 convicts were released early after Keir Starmer’s plans to ease pressure on the justice system came into force.

The policy will see prisoners released after completing 40 per cent of their sentence – rather than the standard 50 per cent – in a bid to free up 5,500 beds.

But many prisoners, perhaps surprisingly, don’t believe that the plans are a good idea.

As they strolled out of prison, some lags brazenly admitted to The Sun that they would go on to re-offend.

Shane Devlin, 36, has just been released after spending a year inside for an ABH conviction.

Government’s core job is to keep us safe – by letting crooks out early Labour have fundamentally failed

WHO would be a pensioner in Britain today?

First your winter allowance is taken away and now our streets have instantly become even more dangerous after 1,700 prisoners were released early yesterday.

The Government’s decision to free jailbirds who have served just 40 per cent of their sentence will inevitably lead to more crime on our streets.

And many women, who were the victims of domestic violence, will be at risk of being beaten and attacked again.

The vast majority of prisoners walking out of jails around the UK on Tuesday will only have served short sentences.

Scenes of them spraying champagne and bragging how they will vote Labour for the rest of their lives were distasteful and so insulting to their victims.

Today’s news summary – Paper Talk

If you are someone who reads every perspective of a story, here is a news summary of all of today’s front pages from today’s newspapers; summarised in a 2-minute read

‘Day of shame as prisoners released early’ - Paper Talk

    Editorial 11 September 2024.

Wednesday’s front pages feature a few leads with several papers focusing on the early release of prisoners in England and Wales. Many of those papers are traditionally right-leaning and see the early release as a ‘day of shame’ for the country and most feature images of men celebrating their release.

The Commons vote on cutting winter fuel payments is picked up by many other publications. The traditional left-leaning newspapers suggest the public move on from the fuel payments and instead focus on supporting the government in its plans to fix public services.

A few international stories make the broadsheet front pages as US President Joe Biden is reportedly weighing up whether Ukraine can use American long-range missiles in Russia.
