Delta variant cases surge as infections more than double in week amid June 21 delay fears
The UK’s Delta variant cases have more than doubled in the past week., with a further 29,892 cases recorded in the seven days up to June 9, Public Health England.
The total number of infections attributed to the variant now stands at 42,323. Across the country, the variant accounts for more than 90% of new Covid cases.
Public Health England said data suggests the Delta variant has a 60% increased chance of spreading in homes compared to the Alpha strain.
The news comes as fears continue to grow the 21 June date to end lockdown will be pushed back due to growing concerns over the Delta variant.
