Dave Chappelle show cancelled over trans comments

Dave Chappelle’s show cancelled by the comedy club in Minnesota where he was set to perform on his comedy tour. The show was cancelled over his recent controversy – involving his views on trans people.

In a comedy special, Chappelle said he was part of ‘team turf’ (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) as he defended JK Rowling’s trans comments. Chappelle said: “Gender is a fact.”

The venue – First Avenue – shared a statement on Instagram saying they were cancelling Chappelle’s performance as they have a missed to make their venues the ‘safest spaces in the country.’

The statement read: ‘The Dave Chappelle show tonight at First Avenue has been cancelled and is moving to the Varsity Theater

To staff, artists, and our community, we hear you and we are sorry. We know we must hold ourselves to the highest standards and we know we let you down.

‘We are not just a black box with people in it and we understand that First Ave is not just a room, but meaningful beyond our walls.

‘The First Avenue team and you have worked hard to make our venues the safest space in the country and we will continue with that mission.

‘We believe in diverse voices and freedom of artistic expression but in honouring that, we lost sight of the impact this would have. We know there are some who will not agree with this decision. You are welcome to send feedback.

‘If you are a ticket holder, look for an email with information on your ticket(s) transferring to the show at Varsity Theater.’

Netflix backlash due to ‘corporate intrests’

The American comedian, 48, has not just addressed the cancellation – but has previously defended his jokes.

He suggested that the backlash he faced over the Netflix special last year was down to ‘corporate interests’ and said that the members of the LGBTQ+ community that he knows have been supportive of each other.

‘I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames it that it’s me versus that community, that’s not what it is,’ he said.

‘Do not blame the LGBTQ community for any of this. It’s about corporate interests, what I can say, and what I cannot say.

‘For the record, and I need you to know this, everyone I know from that community has been loving and supporting, so I don’t know what this nonsense is about.’

Dave Chappelle Netflix special – ‘team turf’

In his comedy special, Chappelle addressed transphobic jokes he has made in the past and said: ‘Any of you who have ever watched me know that I have never had a problem with transgender people. If you listen to what I’m saying, clearly, my problem has always been with white people.’

The special saw him defend JK Rowling’s comment that trans people erase the concept of sex and same-sex attraction.

Chappelle said: ‘Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact. Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I am just saying that those p***ies that they got… you know what I mean?

‘I’m not saying it’s not p***y, but it’s Beyond P***y or Impossible P***y. It tastes like p***y, but that’s not quite what it is, is it? That’s not blood. That’s beet juice.’

Chappelle spoke about trans comedian Daphne Dorman – an apparent friend of his, who he says loved his jokes. She tragically took her own life.

JK Rowling’s comments about transgender people

What are JK Rowling’s comments about transgender people?

The complete timeline of JK Rowling’s comments – from Glamour.

On June 6, 2020, Rowling retweeted an op-ed piece that discussed “people who menstruate,” apparently taking issue with the fact that the story did not use the word women. “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” she wrote.

That initial tweet garnered a lot of backlash, but Rowling did not relent and wrote about her views in more detail. “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth,” she tweeted. “The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women—i.e., to male violence—‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences—is a nonsense.”

She continued, “I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.”
