Dr Fauci says a return to normal life may not happen until next year due to Covid-19 case spike
CNN says a return to normalcy following the coronavirus pandemic could come within a year, but people need to tamp down their expectations for typical summer travel and activities, Dr Anthony Fauci told The Telegraph.
The latest time frame comes on the heels of a week that saw the US case count cross 2 million. Covid-19 cases have increased in 18 states over the past week, with six states reporting more than a 50% jump. This has led some government and health officials to hit pause on reopening efforts.

A third of pupils ‘not engaging with work’
BBC News says 90% of teachers say their pupils are doing less or much less work than they would normally do at this time of year, according to a study.
The report by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) says head-teachers believe around a third of pupils are not engaging with set work.
Limited or no access to technology was a problem for around a quarter of pupils, school leaders told the NFER.

Covid-19 can damage lungs beyond recognition, expert says
The Guardian says covid-19 can leave the lungs of people who died from the disease completely unrecognisable, a professor of cardiovascular science has told parliament.
It created such massive damage in those who spent more than a month in a hospital that it resulted in “complete disruption of the lung architecture,” said Prof Mauro Giacca of King’s College London.

Beijing reports more new Covid-19 cases as WHO warns of cause for concern
France24 says China on Tuesday reported another 27 domestically transmitted coronavirus cases in Beijing, where a fresh cluster linked to a wholesale food market has sparked WHO concern and prompted a huge tace and test programme.
The new cases bring the number of infections confirmed in the capital over the last five days to 106, as city officials locked down more than 20 communities in the city and tested tens of thousands of people.

Saudi Arabia records 4,507 new Covid-19 cases and 39 deaths
Arab News says Saudi Arabia reported 39 new Covid-19 deaths and 4,507 new cases on Monday, the health ministry said.
The ministry said 3,170 patients had recovered from coronavirus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 87,890.
The highest number of recorded cases was in the capital, Riyadh, with 1,658 registered patients, Jeddah second with 413 cases and Makkah third with 389 cases.

Tokyo reports 48 new infections as nightclub cases emerge
Japan Times says the Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 48 new coronavirus infections on Monday – a day after reporting 47 new cases – the largest daily figure since May 5.
Of the 48 cases, 20 were confirmed through a group examination conducted mainly for so-called host club employees, sources said.

New Zealand records first new cases of Covid-19 for three weeks
Evening Standard says New Zealand is no longer covid-19 free after two women flying from London to see dying parents tested positive.
Before they were tested the two women were given an exemption to leave quarantine on compassionate grounds and had driven from Auckland to Wellington.
The women had no contact with any people or any public facilities on their road trip.
