    Covid death toll could remain above 45,000 each year after restrictions are lifted, leading scientist warns

    The i says Britons could be forced to live with a coronavirus death toll of more than 45,000 each year after the lifting of restrictions, a leading scientist has warned.

    Dr John McCauley, director of the World Influenza Centre at the Francis Crick Institute, said winter excess deaths each year range from around 5,000 to 45,000 in England and Wales, and that in years when there are high rates of flu, these are likely to be from influenza. However, he said there was no evidence to indicate that coronavirus would drop to these levels.
