    The US is “not going in the right direction,” Fauci says

    CNN says the US coronavirus pandemic is not headed in a positive direction, but it’s possible to balance the need to reopen with precautions that can help slow the spread of coronavirus, Dr Anthony Fauci has said. 

    He said it’s not a case of either supporting reopening or public health measures. “There’s this feeling of an all or none phenomenon, where you’re either on lockdown or you’re just going to say… the devil may care and just let it all go,” he said.

    England scraps quarantine for ‘low-risk’ countries

    BBC News says people arriving in England from France, Spain, Germany and Italy will no longer need to quarantine from 10 July, the Department for Transport (DTF) has confirmed. 

    A full list of exempt countries posing “a reduced risk” from coronavirus will be published later today. About 60 countries are expected to be on the list, according to BBC’s Nick Watt.

    Outbreaks in English workplaces double in a week

    The Guardian says suspected outbreaks of coronavirus in workplaces in England have almost doubled in the past week, prompting concern as more people return to their jobs.

    Public Health England (PHE) said 43 acute respiratory outbreaks were reported in workplaces in the week ending 28 June, up from 22 in the previous week.

    US reports 55,000 one-day rise in Covid-19 cases, the largest increase ever recorded

    France24 says the US reported more than 55,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, the largest daily increase any country has ever reported, according to a Reuters tally.

    A surge in cases across the US over the past week has put President Trump’s handling of the crisis under the microscope and led several governors to halt plans to reopen their states after strict lockdowns.

    New Covid-19 protocols aimed at spurring commercial activity in Saudi Arabia

    Arab News says Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior has issued a list of Covid-19 precautionary regulations for commercial establishments to follow now that they can resume services. 

    The long list covers a broad range of businesses and entities such as driving schools, education academies, tailors, wedding halls, daycare centres, spas, mosques, flights, public transport, cafes and restaurants, among others.

    Coronavirus Live: India adds 20,00 new cases

    Aljazeera says India reported another single-day record for new virus cases on Friday – 20,903. 

    The figure took the national total to 625,544. The Health Ministry also reported an additional 379 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking fatalities up to 18,213.

    With the current rate of infections, India is expected to surpass Russia’s 660,000 cases in coming days and become the third worst-hit country after the US and Brazil.

    Sky News says Johnny Depp’s libel claim against The Sun after an article in the newspaper referred to him as a “wife-beater” will go ahead next week as planned. 

    The actor brought the case over an April 2018 article in the tabloid, which alleged he was violent towards ex-wife Amber Heard during their two-year marriage.
