    .

Chelsea have become the first team in the Women’s Super League (WSL) to complete an unbeaten 22-game season after beating Liverpool 1-0.

Despite already having bagged the title for the sixth time in a row, there was still plenty to play for as Sonia Bompastor’s side took to the pitch at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Liverpool put pressure on the Blues for the majority of the match, before academy graduate Aggie Beever-Jones fired past goalkeeper Rachel Laws in stoppage time. The team went on to lift the WSL title in front of their home fans.

The victory also meant Chelsea reached 60 points in the WSL this season, the highest points tally in the history of the league.

Arsenal took second place following a 4-3 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.

It was Chelsea’s first title with Bompastor as manager, who took over the role after Emma Hayes – who guided the team to WSL victory five years in a row – left the team last year to coach the United States women’s national team.

Speaking after the game, the French manager said: “It is difficult to realise [what it means]. We had the opportunity to play our final home game here in front of our fans and the atmosphere was amazing.

“As a manager, players and staff, you only live these moments maybe once in your life. It is difficult to believe, but you need to enjoy it because it is a great achievement.”

Goalscorer Beever-Jones told Sky Sports: “We can definitely build from here. If you look at this season, we have got two trophies from four and still have one to play for.

“This unbeaten record we have had in the league, we have broken history today.

“We are always looking to push on to the next thing. We will be ready for next season to push again and hopefully to conquer the Champions League too.”

The Blues, who also won the League Cup, will now be aiming to complete a domestic treble when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup final on 18 May.

Manchester City finished the WSL in fourth, while Brighton and Hove Albion were in fifth. Bringing up the bottom of the table was Tottenham Hotspur, while Crystal Palace have been relegated after finishing in twelfth.
