Haiti

The number of internally displaced people in Haiti has surged to over one million, a threefold increase attributed to escalating gang violence, according to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM). The crisis is most severe in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where displacement rose by 87% between 2023 and 2024.

Violence in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has surged dramatically, leaving at least 150 dead since November 11 and pushing the country’s death toll for the year past 4,500, according to the United Nations. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk warned of escalating chaos, calling for urgent action to halt the gang violence overwhelming the capital.

The Spirit Airlines flight was scheduled to land at Toussaint Louverture International Airport around midday when it was struck. Videos circulating on social media purportedly show bullet holes inside the aircraft, particularly in the crew seating area used during takeoff and landing.
