A man in the car, who was reportedly also injured, is said to have fled on foot.

He then allegedly stabbed one person who tried to stop him before being arrested, Il Tirreno reports.

Footage from the scene shows a badly damaged silver Citroen with its front smashed next to the pavement, with debris surrounding it.

The mayor said: ‘Fortunately, there were no deaths, but seven people were injured, two of them seriously.

‘One woman will likely have to have both legs amputated: she was crushed against the shop window.’

He said the suspect was being questioned at the police station.
