California heatwave continues for eighth day, fears for homeless as extreme heat not slowing down

California heatwave continues into the eighth day as residents desperately seek cool shelter from the extreme heat on Wednesday.

Temperatures were expected to top 108 Fahrenheit in Sacramento and other inland valleys and broke 100 degrees around the Los Angeles area.

The agency that operates most of California’s electrical grid urged consumers to conserve energy during the late afternoon and evening hours to avoid rolling blackouts, as the heat wave blanketing the drought-stricken state and crews fight wildfires caused by the dry conditions.

Many people without air conditioning or homes were able to find relief in cooling centres. But there are fears over the many homeless people in California that lay on the streets.

Charity workers are handing out bottled water to the most vulnerable.

Temperatures are forecast to remain extreme in the coming days before residents start to see the heat ease off over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
