Afghanistan: Britain gears up for phase 2 of the rescue mission after UK troops head home this weekend
The i says with just hours left to evacuate British and Afghan civilians out of Kabul airport, the UK is already gearing up for what it says is phase 2 of the rescue mission.
So far, 11,000 Britons and eligible Afghans have left the country since April, with 9,000 of those airlifted by RAF planes after Operation Pitting began on 14 August.
But there are reportedly 4,000 people – most of them Afghans with a right to settle in the UK – still to be evacuated and, with 1,000 British troops who need to get out before next Tuesday’s 31 August deadline, the timeframe to rescue civilians is narrowing.
