Divya Kishore writes for Meaww, alleging ‘the finding of Brian Laundrie’s partial remains has raised more questions than answers.’ Brian, 23, has been missing for more than a month after he returned to his parent’s Florida home before going out on a hike from which he hasn’t returned. His disappearance came after Brian returned home from a cross-country trip without his girlfriend Gabby Petito. Her remains were discovered a week after she was reported missing. She had been strangled to death up to three weeks prior. Brian was named a person of interest.
Now remains believed to be Brian’s have been found in Florida’s Carlton Reserve in an area that had already been swamped.
Michael McPherson, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Tampa office, said: “Earlier today investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items, such as a backpack and notebook, belonging to Brian Laundrie. These items were found in an area that up until recently had been under water.”
An insider close to the probe said that the alleged human remains “appear to have been there a while,” before adding, “based on the condition of the remains, it may take some time to officially identify. It is going to be a very thorough process with the medical examiner.”
Kishore writes the discovery has left “many scratching their heads” because there had already been a massive search operation for almost a month and authorities hadn’t found anything crucial. And the discovery was made by the already suspicious Chris and Roberta Laundrie – Brian’s parents. It was them who helped authorities and pointed in a particular direction, an area they say they told police to search almost a month ago as it was a place they believed Brian would go. Steven Bertolino, an attorney for the Laundrie family, said in a statement: “Some articles belonging to Brian were found.”
The latest development in the case has complicated the already complex case as people on the internet believe Brian’s parents have something to do with it.
Many have speculated that the place where the young man’s apparent remains were found was staged. A user shared on Twitter, “it took brian laundries parents 30 mins parents to do the job that trained professionals couldn’t in do in weeks. if you still believe that his parents aren’t helping him, you’re fucked up. #BrianLaundrie.”

The New York Post reports on comments from a former prosecutor who claims the discovery of remains may vindicate Brian Laundrie’s parents. In a new report, it is said the “assistance Brian Laundrie’s parents gave to investigators searching for their son “undercuts” speculation that they may have helped him evade authorities.”
Brian’s parents Chris and Roberta Laundrie have faced intense backlash since their son went missing, they’ve remained largely holed up in their home amid the manhunt, initially refused to work with police and have changed their story on when they last saw their son several times. Their behaviour has led to suggestions from protesters and online sleuths that they were in on their son’s actions.
But what does the latest development tell us about the Laundrie parents cooperation with the police investigation and manhunt.
“The fact they may have led investigators to their son’s possessions and possibly his remains — that all undercuts the argument that they were aiding and abetting his escape,” attorney Neama Rahmani, president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, told the Sun.
“That leads me to believe they’ve been cooperative and not the other way around,” he added.
Rahmani believes the remains likely belong to Laundrie – “unless he was trying to plant evidence next to someone else’s remains to throw law enforcement off his tracks.”
The lawyer told the Sun he believes Laundrie was involved in his girlfriend Gabby Petito’s murder – but if the remains found are confirmed to be Brian it will mean authorities will have a hard time solving the sensational case.
“I’m sure Gabby Petito’s family wants some sort of closure, but if Brian Laundrie is dead, this is as good as it’s going to get,” he said.
On Wednesday, the Laundrie family lawyer told CNN that the “probability is strong” that the remains belong to the 23-year-old fugitive, who was named a “person of interest” in Petito’s death.
22-year-old Gabby Petito’s remains were found on Sept 19 in a Wyoming park – her death was ruled a homicide by manual strangulation.

BPR reports that the “something” authorities in Florida found at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park have been confirmed to be partial remains – most likely belonging to Brian Laundrie – boyfriend of murdered Gabby Petito.
The article says that when reports began to emerge about “some articles belonging to Brian” being found at the park, Brian’s “suddenly cooperative parents” were part of the search with authorities. Something they hadn’t previously shown any interest in.
Later on in the day, a press conference was held in which the FBI announced the finding of “remains” and named Laundrie “a person of interest in the murder of Gabby Petito.”
“As you’re aware, the FBI and the North Port Police Department and our state and local law enforcement partners have been searching the area of the Carlton Reserve for Brian Laundrie, a person of interest in the murder of Gabby Petito,” he said.
Carlton Reserve reportedly connects to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park.
“Earlier today, investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items such as a backpack and notebook belonging to Brian Laundrie,” McPherson continued.
“These items were found in an area that up until recently have been underwater. Our evidence response team is on scene using all available forensic resources to process the area. It’s likely the team will be on scene for several days,” he added.
The Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino told CNN host Chris Cuomo that there is a strong possibility the remains are Brian’s and the parents are ‘heartbroken’.
The article pulls into question and lays suspicion of how it was Brian’s father who “coincidentally” was the person to find Brian’s belongings.
“As they went further in, Chris ventured off the trail into the woods. He was zigzagging in different areas. … At some point, Chris locates what’s called a dry bag. … Chris didn’t want to pick the bag up, because he wanted the law enforcement to see it. This was caught on camera. Chris couldn’t find the law enforcement, because they were then out of sight, because Chris had been in the woods,” he said.
“So, he didn’t want to leave the bag there, with a news reporter standing nearby. So, he picked it up. He did meet up shortly with law enforcement. They looked at the contents of the bag. At that time, law enforcement officers showed him a picture on the phone, of a backpack that law enforcement had located, also nearby, and also some distance off the trail. At that point, the Laundries were notified that there’s also remains near the backpack. And they were asked to leave the preserve,” the attorney added.
Laundries father being the one who found his son’s belongings was just an odd example of “happenstance,” according to Bertolino.
Another odd example of “happenstance” was over timing. CNN’s Cuomo said “Let’s deal with the timing here. Why today? Why did the parents choose today to go to the preserve?” as he pressed Bertolino as to why Brian’s parents had finally decided to help.
“The parents had assumed that the experts, the FBI and all the tracking teams they had would be able to locate Brian based upon the information that we had provided them to the specific areas and trails in the park that Brian liked to visit,” the family attorney replied.
“The park had been closed to the public. There was really no other reason for the Laundries to go search anywhere else,” he added.
These “happenstance” have the public even more convinced that Laundrie’s parents had known where he was all along, according to the article.
So what about the theory Chris Laundrie had “planted” the items, asked Cuomo.
“In nice terms, it’s hogwash,” the attorney responded.

“There is no doubt that Brian Laundrie’s parents are busy with law enforcement,” Kaplan told the Daily Mail. “I believe there was some kind of agreement in which they accepted immunity in exchange for their full cooperation.”
The Carlton Reservation has largely been the focus in the search for Brian Laundrie since he was reported missing on September 17. Two days later the remains of his fiancee Gabby Petito were found at Grand Teton National Park. Gabby’s death was ruled a murder by strangulation and Brian remained the only person of interest in the case.
“I believe Brian Laundrie’s parents were torn from the start between wanting to protect their son and not cross a line that would put them in the crosshairs of law enforcement,” added Kaplan, who is now a criminal defense attorney. added. “If you lie to, mislead, or give false information to a federal agent that could lead to an obstructionist criminal prosecution, you could face five years in prison.
