Icelanders reject EU accession talks, maintaining current ties with bloc
On 29 August, a majority of Icelanders rejected reopening EU accession talks, which have been frozen since 2013.
Iceland’s decision effectively maintains its autonomous control over fishing resources while ensuring consistent access to the European single market without formal EU membership.
“This referendum clearly shows our people’s stance; we must respect their decision and focus on strengthening our current relationships,” stated an official from the Icelandic government.

On 29 August, a majority of Icelanders rejected reopening EU accession talks, frozen since 2013, turning down what the government called a “now or never” moment.
The result means no new negotiations with Brussels and no change to Iceland’s existing ties: full access to the single market and Schengen area through the European Economic Area, but no seat in the European Parliament or vote in the Council. The referendum was legally advisory, but the government pledged to respect it, effectively shelving the question for years.
Iceland already adopts most EU law through the European Economic Area. Still, it retains unilateral control over its fishing waters, a legacy of the 1970s Cod Wars, which it was not willing to trade for shared quotas under Brussels’ Common Fisheries Policy.
