Boris Johnson hints at a possible bank holiday if England win Euro 2020 final
PM Boris Johnson has refused to rule out allowing a special bank holiday if England win the Euro 2020 final.
The PM was asked if people will get the day off on Monday if England wins over Italy in the final this Sunday.
He replied only: “I think that would be tempting fate – let’s see what happens.”
According to the Mirror, the idea of either a bank holiday or a day of celebration if England wins has been discussed in government.
But the sources said it was only at the very early stages and no decisions have been officially made.
The Politico website had suggested some in Whitehall wanted a bank holiday this coming Monday if England win the final on Sunday night.
But one Whitehall source told the Mirror: “Logistically I don’t know how that’s possible.
“You’d only be able to announce that at 10pm if they win, which seems a little bit unreasonable for employers.”
The PM said today: “I thought it was the most extraordinary game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an England team play with such creativity and flair and versatility and just keep going like that.
“It was a total nail biter.”
